Desexing Decisions: Research-based, Tailored Advice from Bellarine Veterinary Practice

March 3, 2026

Desexing your dog is one of the most important decisions you’ll make as a pet owner and our helpful team at Bellarine Veterinary Practice in Geelong are available to guide you through the process. Also known as speying for females and castration for males, desexing is a surgical procedure that prevents reproduction and offers a range of health and behavioural benefits.

Our Grovedale clinic now proudly offers laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for female dog desexing, which is a modern, minimally invasive option that’s changing the way we care for pets.

When is the best time to do it?

The answer depends on several factors, including your dog’s breed, size, age, and overall health. Traditionally, desexing was recommended prior to puberty at around six months of age. However, recent research and veterinary guidelines now suggest a more tailored approach.

Smaller dog breeds mature faster and are less prone to joint issues so may be desexed younger than larger breeds who may benefit from waiting until 12-18 months of age to allow full skeletal development.

Why desexing matters

Desexing has many health and behaviour benefits. It can reduce the risk of mammary, ovarian, uterine, and testicular cancers and minimise hormone-driven behaviours like roaming, marking and inter-dog aggression. In females, spaying prevents pyometra which is a life-threatening uterine infection, and in males, castration lowers the chance of prostate disease.

While desexing has many benefits, early procedures may increase the risk of joint problems, incontinence, and certain cancers, especially in large breeds. Additionally, desexed dogs may be more prone to weight gain, so a balanced diet and regular exercise are essential.

Consult Your Vet

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Our experienced veterinarians at Bellarine Veterinary Practice will assess your dog’s breed, growth rate, temperament, and health status to recommend the ideal timing and procedure to prevent pregnancy.

Ultimately, desexing supports responsible pet ownership and choosing the right time gives your dog the best chance of a long, healthy life.
