Geelong PennHIP and hip dysplasia imaging

Many dogs, particularly larger breeds, will suffer from ailing hip joints in their lifetime – commonly from painful osteoarthritis secondary to inherited hip dysplasia. At Bellarine Veterinary Practice, Geelong, we employ the innovative PennHIP method of measuring, interpreting and assessing hip joint laxity in dogs from as young as 16 weeks of age, which can help guide decisions about breeding, lifestyle and long-term joint care.

PennHIP involves capturing radiographs of a dog’s hip region, from three separate views – the hip extended view, the compression view and the distraction view. The hip extended view, the traditional radiograph used to evaluate the hip joint, will give an initial indication of the presence of osteoarthritis. The compression and distraction views below provide exact measurements of joint laxity and congruity.

At Bellarine Veterinary Practice, we are accredited in the PennHIP technique. This method is our preferred technique for assessing excessive canine hip laxity which results in a higher risk of developing hip dysplasia, predisposing dogs to subsequent hip osteoarthritis, as it allows for detection BEFORE arthritis develops. We also offer conventional hip dysplasia imaging along with elbow scoring because early intervention is crucial if elbow dysplasia is present. We work with a range of veterinary radiologists to ensure certification for breed societies in stud dogs.

For your pet’s safety and comfort, your dog will be sedated during the radiographic process of the PennHIP method at our Newcomb veterinary clinic. To obtain the best possible diagnostic radiographs, it is important that the patient is relaxed and still.
