DOG VACCINATIONS

BVP is now following a new vaccination protocol as advised by the Australian Veterinary Association.   In keeping with trends in human and veterinary medicine, international research and new vaccine development has led to significant changes in the intervals of vaccinations.  The important diseases of Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus are now being prevented with vaccines that give three years of protection.  However Canine Cough (also known as Kennel Cough) still requires annual vaccination.  Geelong has a very high incident of Kennel Cough and so vaccination is strongly recommended.   Kennel Cough spreads in the air and dogs do not have to be in kennels to contract it.

Your dog's new vaccination program will comprise a general health examination followed by a full C5 vaccination in the first year.  Your dog will then receive an annual health exam and Canine/Kennel Cough vaccination in the subsequent second and third years, then the process starts again.  If your dog does board at kennels this regime is still equivalent to having a C5 vaccine every year.

The cost of the vaccine will vary each year, as you will be only charged for what vaccines your dog receives in that year, however over the three years it will average out to be similar to having the old C5 vaccination each year.
